Good things come to those who wait. Or good things come in small packages (or a pallet full of boxes). Or for those with young children, ‘What’s in the box?’.
We all get tired and things do start to wear out. Tyres wear (hopefully in a uniform manner) and lose wet grip. Bushes tend to harden, crack and split. Springs corrode and may snap. But dampers can do an excellent job of hiding their fatigue. They often get tired very slowly, so the driver doesn’t pick up the changes (as a back-to-back with a new car isn’t usual practice). Unless visibly leaking oil, they are unlikely to receive a comment from the MOT tester. But they have probably lost any gas charge used in the assembly process and the damper forces produced may not be as the dynamics engineer intended. Oh, and I am writing this whilst yawning (as you no doubt are whilst reading this) and my back aches again.
What can we do? Other than suggesting that you stop reading this, you may consider freshening up your pride and joy with a new set of dampers. The MG ZR could be described as tough and unyielding in the suspension department – which contributes significantly to its hot hatch dynamic appeal – but is also getting on a bit. (Check out the ZED 25 celebrations this year). If only brand new, original specification front and rear dampers were available.
Well, they are, only even better. Made for us by Bilstein, our MG ZR dampers are faithful to the performance that attracted such attention at launch. We can’t claim that they will reverse tyre wear or even help with back pain, but we do know that from a damping point of view, your ZR will be factory fresh (reversed baseball cap remains optional).
To paraphrase yet another well-worn comment, other models are available. As in, we have developed dampers (and other stuff) for many other vehicles. We even do a conversion for the MG ZR front struts, should you wish to add more performance, plushness of ride and greater camber stiffness (grip and steering response linearity to you and me).
